My background:
I have lived in Wellington for over 40 years, and now live in Lower Hutt with my family. My qualifications are a Dip. Hort., and NDH (Hons). I have spent over 28 years in the horticulture industry, as a nurseryman, landscape consultant, and lecturer. I have appeared on radio and TV and have written 6 books. I am currently lecturing part-time at the Victoria University School of Design.
Business Philosophy:
The philosophy of my business is to provide quality professional advice and service to my customers. Nearly all of my work is by referral, so my work has to speak for itself. I believe in getting the job right the first time. I use professional subcontractors who I trust to do an excellent job. I believe in carefully listening to what the client wants, and matching these needs with the conditions on the site.
I am a full member of The Landscape Industries Association of New Zealand in the design and soft construction categories. I endorse the philosophy of Landscaping NZ, which is to represent professionals in the landscape industry, and have members who are reliable and reputable. This means I have a standard to uphold for my clients, and my clients can have the additional security of a professional organisation to back this up.
My philosophy ties in with what I have written in my books. In Wellington Gardens, the main emphasis is on observing the prevailing climatic and soil conditions, and matching the planting to those conditions. In the A-Z Pruning Handbook, the emphasis is on knowing each plant, and what are the correct procedures to prune those plants. For this reason I only use professional arborists for my work
