Key to Pruning

L Prune lightly - cut back to node past flowers or remove tips.
M Prune moderately - Cut back up to 1/3 to a node
H Prune hard - Cut back 1/2 or more into old woody growth or near the ground.
3D's Removal of dead, diseased and damaged wood is usually all that is needed,
although comments may suggest other pruning eg crown thinning. Note that all
plants mentioned should have the 3D's removed as a matter of course.

Breath-of-heaven L After flowering Keep compact.
Cabbage tree Anytime No pruning except removal of old leaves.
Californian lilac H Summer Cut back one-half.
Camellia M After flowering Train sasanquas as hedge, keep shrubs open.
Canary Is. date palm Anytime Removal of fronds, watch spines.
Carmine rata L After flowering Cut back to keep shape.
Cedar 3D's Anytime Keep to one leader.
Cherry (Ornamental) 3D's Summer Shape tree.
Cherry (Fruiting) 3D's, L Summer Shape, reduce crown
Clematis(Early) L After flowering Need little pruning
Clematis (Late) H Late winter-early spring Cut back vines to within 15-30 cm of ground.
Coral pea H After flowering Cut back every 2nd year to ground.
Corokia L Anytime Train as hedge.
Creeping fig L Anytime Prune to keep juvenile growth.
Currrant (Black) H After fruiting Remove fruited shoots.
Currant (Red & White) L Late winter-early spring Remove old & weak growth.
Daphne L After flowering Cut back to keep shape.
Deutzia L, H After flowering Cut back flowered shoots on old plants.
